Northwest Vista College Business Council Creates Opportunities for Success

Some folks may not be aware that business community members have been engaging with Northwest Vista in “creating opportunities for success” for our students.

Over the past few years, NVC Business Council members have supported students by participating in panel discussions about their career experiences, and they have supported the NVC Student Business Organization with scholarships.

Now with nine contributing members and about 22 friends, the Council has set a goal of raising $15,000 for scholarships in 2014 and expanding to 20 contributing Council members, each donating between $250 to $2,000.

The Council will be collaborating again with the Business Student Organization and will launch the first part of its Business Leadership Initiative in March with presentations featuring top business leaders in our area talking to students about leadership, business and the “real world”.  The presentations will be held on April 11 and May 2 at 11 a.m. in Pecan Hall.

Funds raised by the Council are used for NVC scholarships and special programs. In addition, Council members participate in an array of NVC activities including strategic planning, scholarship application judging, special events such as the Scholarships for Students golf tournament and programs for student organizations.

The chair of the Council is Rosantina Aranda, vice president and business banker of Frost Bank. Chair-Elect is Shelah Simmons, Ph.D., CEO of Genesis Professional Solutions. Ted Terrazas, senior vice president for Medical Services of Chenega Corporation, served as founding chair of the Council.

If you know of a business that would like to get involved, contact Lynne Dean, director of NVC Institutional Advancement, at [email protected].  By the way, thanks to Lynne for her work in creating this community connection.
