Michael Rico

“I did not realize my academic strengths until I completed two years at Northwest Vista College.”

Michael Rico graduated from Northwest Vista College in 2000, completing an associate’s degree in Liberal Arts, with a concentration in Business.

Michael has since gone on to continue his education, graduating from St. Mary’s University in 2002, with a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature. He is now employed at USAA where he works with people on issues related to home ownership and mortgages.

Accomplishment runs in the family for Michael Rico, with both his brother and mother being graduates of NVC.

Michael says he didn’t realize at the time how his classes NVC would help him so much professionally later in life.

“English Literature classes strengthened my reading and analyzing skills,” Michael says. “This aided me greatly in my career in that I must abide and advise members on the many guidelines of successfully applying for a mortgage,” he added.

Michael says while enrolled at NVC that he discovered his true passion.

“I am glad I sampled classes being offered,” he shared. “This helped me identify that English Literature was my interest and my strength, and encouraged me to earn my degree at St. Mary’s University.”

In addition to his successes in school and at work, Michael actively competes in obstacle course races that range in distances from three to 12 miles.

His message to current students is to stay focused and look towards the Vista Value of Joy.

“I realize high school students are tempted to obtain a job after graduating instead of continuing their education,” he said. “The value of joy is important because it encourages students to continue with school and ultimately obtain a more challenging and rewarding career.”

Looking forward, Michael would like to offer students the same guidance and support he says he received at NVC.  He hopes to someday return to Northwest Vista as a teacher in the English as a Second Language department.
