Four students from across the United States have been selected as winners in the fourth annual musical-score contest for community college students – the only national contest of its kind for two-year college students.

All four winners will have their pieces performed at a concert on April 23 at 7 p.m. in the Recital Studio (room 107) in Palmetto Center for the Arts/Northwest Vista College. The winner will receive the Jack Stone Award for New Music and a cash prize. The first and second runners-up also are recognized and receive cash prizes.

The concert will feature professional performers Amari Pepper Barash on the oboe; Evan Jones on the cello; and John Godoy on percussion. Following the concert, there will be a reception.

The winners of the competition are:

  • Jack Stone Award for New Music: Connor Helms, Rock Valley College, Rockford, IL
  • First Runner Up: Morgan Morse, Naugatuck Valley Community College, Waterbury, CT
  • Second Runner Up (tied): Nicholas Vaquera, Northwest Vista College, San Antonio, TX
  • Second Runner Up (tied): Paul Rigoli, Erie Community College, Buffalo, NY

You are invited to listen to two nights of exhilarating music from talented NVC students!

  • Wednesday, April 24: the choirs and chamber ensembles will be featured; and on

  • Thursday, April 25: the A-JAM combo and the jazz ensemble will perform.  

Each night, soloists: singers and instrumentalists of all kinds will perform. The ticket ticket charge is $4 per night.
