April 12, 2013 | SharkAdmin [image 1]Northwest Vista College Students received the opportunity on April 11 to take part in an open discussion with Alamo Colleges Chancellor Bruce Leslie, Ph.D. The students asked a variety of questions from his thoughts of standardized education, safety on campus, adding more summer classes, financial aid issues to the new parking garage. Leslie said taking part in these discussions allows him to better understand what’s working and not working well; and how to make the campuses better. He said his ultimate job is to provide students with the best education possible at an efficient cost while attending a high-performing system. [image 2]Leslie said one of the challenges he’s hoping the community college system can overcome is how many people perceive it. For instance, many think “going to community college is like going to high school.” He said students who go to a university after high school take the proper steps to prepare, like taking the SAT exam ahead of time. But often they don’t take necessary first steps to prepare going to a community college. Another challenge he cited is making sure students understand academic terms we take for granted, such as “bursar.” [image 3]Most students, he added, don’t know what that is, so we have to do a better job of talking the same language.
