January 31, 2014 | SharkAdmin The recycling process at NVC is changing. In the past, our facilities crew, with the help of work studies, took care of emptying our recycling bins in classrooms and hallways into the large wheeled totes. Our housekeeping vendor, GCA, would then haul the totes to our single stream compactor at Mexican Persimmon. Our Facilities department can no longer handle the volume of work associated with maintaining our recycling efforts along with all of their other duties and responsibilities for the physical upkeep of the campus. Therefore, GCA is currently in the process of hiring a person to specifically handle the recycling on campus. The big change that you will notice is that recycling bins will no longer be collected from the classrooms or individual offices. Instead, there will be 2 recycling totes placed on every floor of the buildings where recyclable materials can be deposited. Aluminum cans, plastic bottles and paper recyclables will all be collected in the totes (no need to separate them). Cardboard should be broken down and placed next to the totes, not in them. We ask that students and employees continue to recycle, but that they take their recyclable materials from the classrooms and offices to the totes in the hallways of each building. Our PR department has developed a Recycling Poster that will be placed in classrooms and main areas over the next week. If you see someone throwing recyclables in a trashcan, please gently remind them that there are recycling receptacles in the hallways. If you have any questions or concerns about overfilled, missing or broken recycling totes, please contact our Facilities Department at 486-4888 or submit a Service Request Form at this link http://www.alamo.edu/district/facilities/. Thank you for continuing to support NVC’s efforts to be an environmentally responsible member of our community! By Sabrina Carey, NVC College Events Coordinator
