Debate Party Attracts Hundreds of Students

Holding a presidential debate party on campus is one sure way to attract a lot of students!

The Oct. 4 presidential debate party held at the Cypress Campus Center attracted over 250 attendees, as well as several local political candidates including:

  • State Rep. Joaquin Castro, Democratic candidate for U.S. Congress District 20
  • David Rosa, Republican Candidate for U.S. Congress District 20
  • Joseph Appelt, Candidate for Bexar County 57th District Court
  • Robert Stovall, Candidate for Bexar County Tax Assessor-Collector
  • Art Rossi, Candidate for 37th District Court, Bexar County

“It was truly inspirational to see that many NVC students, some who had just registered to vote for the first time, come out on a weeknight to engage in our democracy,”said Craig Coroneos, Humanities faculty and one of the coordinators of the event.

The NVC student club, Project Dem, along with the NVC Democracy Commitment team, also registered about 65 voters that night.

There will be another debate party for the final debate on Monday, Oct. 22 in Cypress cafeteria. Craig added there will be “PLENTY” of free pizza this time, and instructors are encouraged to offer their students extra credit to attend the event.
