October 29, 2012 | SharkAdmin [image 1]Employee Development Day gave employees an opportunity to take a break from busy schedules to learn about important topics and network with one another. Employees got to choose from a variety of topis that dealt with diversity, faculty evaluations, customer service, leadership, Baldrige and Canvas. A special message came from guest speaker Dr. Joe Martin, who from a young age didn’t think college would be in his future and was turned down from numerous colleges. Growing up with an unfortunate set of circumstances, Dr. Martin now travels the country speaking at numerous colleges as a motivational speaker, author, professor and educational consultant. His main message at NVC was “everyone” can help motivate students to succeed. He said this includes getting out of your comfort zone to give a student extra encouragement, lending them a hand or walking them through a process. He said it was those people (an administrative assistant, a grounds keeper and an instructor) who spent a little extra time on him that led him to where he is now. [image 2]Dr. Martin also challenged employees at a later session to be the example so others will follow, whether it be students, employees, spouses or children. One faculty member asked Dr. Martin how could he encourage his students not to be late to class. Dr. Martin said he offered his own students money if he was ever late to class and in his decade-long career as an instructor, he's never had to pay a dime.
