January 23, 2016 | SharkAdmin NVC Status: Texas Gun Law Changes Last year the Texas Legislature passed laws regarding the carrying of guns that have been the topic of much discussion at NVC, throughout the Alamo Colleges district and state. NVC is required to implement the law August 1, 2017 as written. We remain committed to doing so while continuing to ensure safety on the NVC campus. The NVC Department of Public Safety will always respond to reports of an armed individual. Anytime you see suspicious activity, you should call the Alamo police (485-0911). Here's a snapshot of the law: Effective Dates of the law: August 1, 2016 for all state four-year colleges and universities; August 1, 2017 for all state two-year and junior colleges. The new Texas law will permit individuals who have obtained a concealed handgun license (CHL) to carry their loaded, concealed weapon in college and university buildings. Each college and university may determine certain sensitive areas and buildings* where concealed weapons will continue to be prohibited. Each college and university must publically display campus policies on the official school website, and building entrances, as well as widely publicizing it with the institution’s faculty, staff, and students. *The district and the colleges will communicate soon where these sensitive areas are on campus.
