August 21, 2015 | SharkAdmin Northwest Vista College held its Inaugural New Student Convocation on Aug. 14. Over 130 students and 120 guests RSVP’d for this event to have the opportunity to get additional information on how students can reach their educational goals. NVC President Dr. Ric Baser provided a warm welcome along with some experiences he had in higher education and his career path. He introduced the keynote speaker – the 2015 National Teacher of the year – Shanna Peeples. She shared her own experiences she had in higher education and how/why she became a teacher. Shane provided advice (information that college students have shared with her), on what it takes to be a successful student, especially in the first semester of college. Some of her advice included time management, asking questions and being well balanced. Following the welcome and keynote, students were lead to breakout sessions in Live Oak Hall. They were able to meet with their advisors and obtain more information on their upcoming educational path. Family and friends remained in the auditorium and were provided important information on the role they play in their students’ lives and how they could better support them in their journey. To close the event, all students, guests, faculty and staff gathered in the outside classroom near Live Oak for one large group photo with Wildcat Willie! “It was a great first time event with many memorable moments—we’re excited about the next Convocation as we plan for it to be even bigger and better!” said Destiny C. Harper-Lane, coordinator for NVC Welcome Center & New Student Orientation. [image 1]
