Last Java with Jackie

[image 1]Thursday, June 26 marked the last Java with Jackie at NVC, which was held at Manzanillo Hall. These informal forums were a way for both faculty and staff to bring up topics of concern or just ask general questions.

In this last conversation, Jackie talked a bit about Alamo Colleges trying to improve communication with employees. Alamo Colleges Vice Chancellor of Academic Success Jo-Carol Fabianke and her staff visited NVC June 26 to start the dialogue with employees.

Jackie added NVC will be announcing soon its hiring 12 new advisors; and she addressed the need to help students with their long-term career goals.

[image 2]“We have to work at finding emerging career programs. About 11 percent of our student population is in technical programs,” Jackie said. “I think we should have at least 20 percent of our students in applied science programs. The sad part is if we don’t continue to push students in fine and performing arts, you won’t have a balance, but students must understand the reality of going into a career like that in which you might not make a lot of money.”
