Leadership & 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.” – John F. Kennedy

Learning is what we are about. It is central to our mission and vision for our students and for us as faculty and staff. As you may know, the intent is to add leadership as a student-learning outcome across the Alamo Colleges. And of course we each want to enrich our leadership skills.

To that end, Alamo Colleges has entered into a partnership with Franklin Covey to use their “7 Habits for Highly Effective People” training materials and trainers to:

  • Train every Alamo Colleges employee and
  • Integrate into our curriculum for students, beginning in a college level Learning Foundations course (which will replace the current SDEV course)
  • Provide additional training for faculty who will teach the Learning Foundations course.

What does the employee training offer me?

The “7 Habits for Highly Effective People” curriculum is designed as a guide for enhancing personal and interpersonal effectiveness. The content is based on seven character-based principles. They are:

  • Be Proactive
  • Begin with the End in Mind
  • Put First Things First
  • Think Win/Win
  • Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood (my personal favorite)
  • Synergize
  • Sharpen the Saw

Is this training the be all to end all? Certainly not, but since great leadership begins with one’s character, it is a good place to start – for us and for our students.

Employee Training Program Details

The expectation is that every NVC/Alamo Colleges employee will complete this training by the end of this academic year. More than 20 classes are scheduled between now and February 2014, with a variety of time frames to accommodate varying needs. Each class has two eight-hour sessions and one four-hour session. This link ([file 1]) will take you to a listing of the offerings with information about times and dates for each class.

To sign up for one of the classes, go to AlamoLearn (in ACES on the employee tab home page). As you sign up, make certain you get the format that works best for and your job requirements. I encourage you to work with your supervisor to identify a time that works for your team, and I encourage you to take advantage of this learning opportunity at your earliest convenience. Feel free to contact me if you have questions.

Update: Darryl Nettles and Jim Lievens are co-facilitating a “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” class Jan. 14-16 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday and until 12:30 p.m. on Thursday. To sign up, look for the date in AlamoLearn.
