That required additional training which I found with the Northwest Vista Community Health Worker Program.” Ludivina Hernandez completed a Community Health Worker Certificate from Northwest Vista College in 2012. She says NVC helped open doors for her to find employment at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio Reach Center, where she is currently helping conduct research to advance community health in San Antonio. In addition to working at UTHSCSA, Ludivina is a “Promotora,” involved in numerous community programs that promote well-being throughout the Westside of San Antonio. “My passions are my grandchildren, my church and community,” she says. Ludivina reminds individuals that it’s ’never too late to pursue education. “I had stayed home to care for family members and at age 54, with my husband’s support, I returned to full-time work and school,” she said. What she remembers most about her time at NVC was the classroom experience and the instruction she received from Dr. Fernando Martinez. “Dr. Martinez is a great motivator in the classroom,” she recalls. “He taught us the required material with just enough humor to make it fun.” Ludivina’s favorite Vista Value is Learning. “I want my grandchildren to know that with hard work anything is possible.”
