November All College Meeting

[image 1]The November All College meeting, hosted by NVC Distance Learning, started off with a representative of  Any Baby Can encouraging NVC employees to donate to her organization that serves children facing serious health or developmental challenges.

Kay Maynard of Any Baby Can held up a doll to symbolize the difference her organization can make in a baby’s life. She told the audience to just imagine if the doll was born with a crippling health condition in which she needed specialized medicine and formula her parents couldn’t provide. With the help of Any Baby Can, the doll/baby got the help she needed [image 3]and is now an active 8-year-old girl.

Any Baby Can is just one of many organizations that NVC employees can donate to as part of the Employee Giving Back Campaign that’s ending Dec. 1. Some employees who already donated got a chance to win prizes, such as a massage, $25 gift card to the NVC book store and tickets to the NVC Winter Social.

Former dean of NVC Library Resources Christine Crowley also gave $5,500 to match funds that were donated to several scholarships. NVC President Jackie Claunch also matched donations to those who contributed to theFund, an organization that helps arts programs in San Antonio.

[image 4]English Faculty Natalia Trevino gave a presentation titled “Numbers One, Two, Two – But We’re Not Through!” about the effort to improve developmental education in English and math. She said there are a number of initiatives in the works to make sure students are on the right path which includes more faculty, departmental and classroom advising.

Prior to the end of the meeting, a check presentation was made to honor students who were recently given T-STEM scholarships. Alamo Colleges received a $197,500 from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for scholarships for STEM students. NVC has the most students – 79 – who are recipients of the $2,500 per year award.

Scholarship recipient Isaac Castillo said, “I wanted to be able to thank everyone personally for the scholarship because it has really helped my mom and I a lot. This is one of my first scholarships that I have applied for and received and it really [image 5]made me more motivated to hurry up and finish my college degree and get out into the real world.”
