Representatives of Area Businesses Share ‘Real World’ Experiences

Four area business leaders talked to NVC Business Student Organization members the morning of Nov. 22 about “real world” experiences and answered questions ranging from the importance of community service on a resume to how important a good GPA is to how long those in the hiring process spend reading a resume.

The panel included Brian Carter, director of communications and interactive marketing at SeaWorld San Antonio; Shelah Simmons, Ph.D., CEO of Genesis Professional Solutions; Luci Harty, owner of Luci Harty Advisors; and Tim Louton, vice president of Rudy's Country Store and Bar-B-Q.

Brian Carter and Shelah Simmons are both members of the NVC Business Council, which participated in the planning of the event.

Jose Joles, president of the organization, introduced the panelists. The program began with each of the panelists answering questions related to what they look for in a job applicant, reasons for promotions, whether or not what they were learning in the classroom is relevant to the “real world” and the impact of ethics and character on an individual’s career.
