It’s about knowing that someone else out there believes in you and what you want to do with your life,” said Peter Northrop, an NVC scholarship recipient, who shared with scholarship donors and fellow scholarship students the impact of scholarships on his plans for the future this morning at the Scholarship Recognition Breakfast held in the Huisache Hall Banquet Room. He and three other NVC scholarship students thanked donors and talked about their plans for the future. Mary Kate Crockett, a Business Administration major; Julissa Del Bosque, a Biology major planning to become a pediatric orthopedic surgeon; and Sharman Castillo, a Music Technology major who plans to go into music ministry, also talked about their experiences at NVC and future plans. Randy Pawelek, chair and CEO of Bartlett Cocke General Contractors, talked about his company and how they narrowed the focus of their giving to primarily scholarships. Bartlett Cocke created the Bartlett Cocke General Contractors Endowed Scholarship in 2010 for students studying areas related to construction. At the conclusion of his talk, he presented a check for $5,000 to Dr. Jackie Claunch to add to the company’s established endowed scholarship. He also provided CDs entitled “Hollywood or Beach” by the Jaiy Randy Band to all in attendance. He is one of the composers and musicians in the band. Robert Marbut, an NVC faculty member, talked about contributing to other NVC scholarships, then deciding to start his own endowed scholarship to help students seeking a career in public service. He has set a goal of raising $100,000 for the scholarship and encouraged others to think about scholarships. The Scholarship Recognition Breakfast is an annual event of the Community Development Department to recognize donors who support NVC scholarships and scholarship students. Contributed by
