Tribute to Mexican Songwriter Sept. 30

NVC welcomes José Rubén De León to the Palmetto Center of the Arts on Sept. 30.

He will perform his tribute to legendary Mexican composer Agustín Lara. De León created “Simplemente Lara,” to honor the life and music of the pre-World War II songwriter and showcase the romantic music of Mexico’s Golden Age.

Music selections include the ever-popular “Veracruz,” “Noche de Ronda,” “Solamente una Vez,” and many more. Sharing the theater stage with De León is the father-and-son jazz duo, bassist George Prado and pianist Aaron Ellington Prado. The performance will take place at 3 p.m.

“Simplemente Lara” has received much praise from music critics and it was voted one of San Antonio’s Best Shows of 2005 by the San Antonio Express-News.

“Simplemente Lara” is a splendid tribute certain to delight listeners while sweeping them into a realm of romance and nostalgia. Reviewers have described De León’s voice as “an attractive, velvety baritone flecked with a faint burr.”
